EMPIG AS develops Flow Assurance technologies for the oil- and gas industry.  Our patented technologies will reduce CAPEX and OPEX, increase oil recovery, open hard to reach areas and reduce environmental impact.


In 2017 the project was granted funding through the Large-scale Programme for Petroleum Research (PETROMAKS 2) by the Research Council of Norway. The funding enables increased project activity towards large scale technology testing in 2019.

EMPIG AS holds multiple processing plant technologies for removal of wax and hydrate deposits in pipelines in a cold flow regime – both subsea and onshore.

The Inductive Flow (InFlow) system removes pipe wall deposits by the means of inductive heating of the pipes. The system operates both up- and down stream without reducing flow rates. When the pipe is heated, the deposit will separate from the pipe wall and is effortlessly transported with the rest of the bulk flow.

A specially designed inductive coil is embedded in a non-intrusive external sled placed on the outside of one, or several, pipes. Any deposit on the inner wall of a pipe is removed as the sled is moved along the cooling zone pipes.

InFlow may be used in any flow system where the pipe material is electrically conductive. The concept is proven feasible through laboratory testing.









The Electro-Resistive Flow (ERFlow) system removes pipe wall deposits by the means of heating of the pipes. The system is unique in the sense that it has no moving parts. Pipe segments are sequentially heated to release deposits from the pipe wall.

The ERFlow System may installed in any flow system where the pipe material is electrically conductive.

EMPIG will solve both wax and hydrate challenges and enable a cheap and robust Cold Flow regime. This will make it feasible to implement complete subsea developments and significant longer tie-back distances than what is possible today. The system can also be used onshore for low cost long distance hydro carbon transport. The potential for the system is vast in terms of future oil and gas production.

Our Flow Assurance technology will enable a efficient production and directly reduce the need of harmful chemicals and use of valuable resources.

EMPIG AS has been granted funding through DEMO2000 by the Research Council of Norway. This enables us to continue developing our novel flow assurance technology together with our industry partners.

Our test facility is fully operational, and our Autonomous large scale Cooler Cleaning System works. A unique multiphase flow loop has been built to simulate a warm wellhead, and a subsea environment, giving us a TRL4 flow regime. We use crude oil from a Norwegian field development, and any flow composition is achievable. Next up is our long-term continuous system verification test.

We climb the TRL ladder and hire personnel with full focus on technology development and testing.


EMPIG plans to do a large scale, and long term, proof-of-concept (TRL) test and the project is granted Petromaks 2 funding. We partner up with SINTEF Industry, Kværner Verdal, VNG and Lundin.


CTO Fredrik Lund held a presentation during the Flow Assurance conference 2016 in Trondheim.


InFlow and PMFlow are in constant development. Substantial lab-test has proved both concepts feasible.


Positive result on the InFlow patent application from the Norwegian Industrial Property Office.

EMPIG is currently developing two complementary technologies – InFlow and PMFlow for pipe deposit removal. Both are non-intrusive, bi-directional methods, which will not affect the flow. Stay tuned!


EMPIG is further developing the PMFlow System and a proof of concept is performed. The results are better than expected.

Clogging from hydrates and wax depositions is a huge and costly challenge for the oil industry. The deposits are formed when the warm flow cools down due to the temperature differences between the pipe and surroundings on the sea floor. Such deposits will clog the pipes and make them useless if it is not regularly removed in one way or another.

The current flow assurance solutions are based on keeping the flow over Wax Appearance Temperature (WAT) – the temperature limit where wax and hydrates are formed. If the temperature of the flow is over WAT, wax and hydrates are avoided, but it is very expensive to keep the temperature up even at short distances.

The easiest way to achieve a profitable and safe system for long-distance transportation in pipelines is to introduce a Cold Flow regime.

Cold Flow is achieved when the sea water, production flow and the pipeline keeps the same temperature (ambient – the oil is cooled to ambient temperature), where you do not get wax buildup. The challenges for achieving Cold Flow is in the cooling process, where oil and gas is cooled down to get sea water/ ambient temperature. In this process we will have significant amounts of deposits, but in a controlled and restricted area.

EMPIG’s technologies represent significant economical, environmental and safety benefits:
